Please join us for TAKEOVER: San Francisco, a group exhibition featuring artwork by female and non-binary artists, in conjunction with the official release of TAKEOVER Art Zine, a publication organized by artist Serena Cole.

Initiated during the misogynist and xenophobic presidential campaign of Donald Trump, TAKEOVER Art Zine serves to rectify the ongoing lack of recognition for young female and gender non-binary artists in contemporary galleries, museums, and by art critics. The publication showcases outstanding contemporary artwork by female and genderqueer artists, and creates an opportunity to foster important conversations about what it means to be a female or non-binary artist in the context of a misogynistic political regime. TAKEOVER ‘zine features the artwork and writings of thirty-six artists and one curator, and is available at http://takeoverartzine.bigcartel.com .

From November 18 to 25 2017, thirty of the artists from the ‘zine will exhibit their work in TAKEOVER: San Francisco at Alter Space Gallery. Copies of the publication will be available for purchase at the gallery.

The artists included in the exhibition are: Ace Lehner, Bean Gilsdorf, Bruna Massadas, Cate Nelson, Christina Empedocles, Danielle Lawrence, Elise Irving, Elizabeth Russell, Em Meine, Jamie Vasta, Julie Henson, Kate Nartker, Kim Bennett, Koak, Kristin Farr, Lana Licata, Leah Thomason Bromberg, Lukaza Branfman-Verissimo, Marci Washington, Mary Anne Kluth, Megan Reed, Melissa Dickenson, Mia Christopher, Rema Ghuloum, Sarah Thibault, Serena Cole, Sky Shapero, Sydney Cohen, Teresa Baker, Tracy Timmins. The exhibition is curated by TAKEOVER founder Serena Cole.

SERENA COLE // LET ME LOOK AT YOU

Gallery 16 is proud to announce our first solo exhibition with Bay Area artist Serena Cole. Cole, has become well known for her work as a portraitist. As a painter, she utilizes the traditions of draftsmanship and portraiture to emphasize the idea of individual experience and alienation. She is interested in what the tropes of modern identity reveal about our collective psychology, the culture of consumption and escapism, and the complexity of fantasy. Her skills as a portraitist put her in the vanguard of artists working in the medium today. She combines watercolor, gouache and gold leaf to render opulent and disquieting portraits. “I’m fascinated by the idea that we all want to be someone else, but the person we want to be also wants to be someone else.” Cole's work has been in a numerous private collections around the country and has been included in exhibitions at Phillips de Pury, New York, NY,  Soo Visual Arts Center, Minneapolis, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, Mark Moore Gallery, Culver City, CA.
